Ready for 2013?

December 31, 2012

TedsTalks2-0022012 was GREAT!  We’re really proud of our three new books at Spectrum Press and particularly that we’ve been able to support new authors in both our anthology and the ABC’s of Ability: an ABC book about the lives of adults with disabilities.  Susan’s book, Getting to Community: Supporting People with Developmental Disabilities in their Pursuit of the Good Life, is just as great as we expected and is getting really good feedback.   We’re also thrilled to be partnering with Inclusion Press, because they’re kind of our heroes.

It is a really exciting (and nerve wracking) process to watch a book go from idea to publication and then hand it over to the world…  there’s nothing like it.   Most days we love it.  Some days it’s just scary.  Thank you all for your kindnesses and comments and for telling people about our work and sending them our way.

In 2013 we’ll be continuing to do more workshops about the importance of relationships, but also branching out into some new areas.   Shelley and I, and three different self advocate co-facilitators, will be doing some community mapping with self advocates in Vancouver, Victoria and Vernon.   We’ll be setting dates soon.  Thanks to the B.C. Ideas for selecting our project.

With self advocate Cheryl Fryfield and David Wetherow we’ll be working on “Cheryl’s Star Raft Salons” – a new venture that we’ll finalise planning for over the next month and announce shortly.   Thanks to Community Living B.C. and the B.C. Gaming Commission for supporting this great project.

Our focus over the last few years has been on partnerships, and we’re grateful to have found so many willing and wonderful people and organizations who are excited to, as David Wetherow says, “Play in the sandbox with us!”   In the playing, we’re all part of building a new world.

Over the last year, but particularly in the last few days as the year winds down I’ve been thinking about circles, and spirals, and bowls.   Medicine wheels.  Networks.  Star rafts.  It seems like something began when we were doing some learning with Lee Anne Ragan of Rock Paper Scissors and she brought me a gift of two small shallow carved stone bowls and told me that there’s a tradition of a gift of two bowls, one to scoop up with, one to give something away.  Soon after that David Wetherow introduced us to the stone game  and somewhere in there we got involved in the C.L.B.C. appreciative inquiry employment project, which was such great learning and then David showed us the Star Raft.   The circles get wider and higher and more encompassing…

Lao Tzu, in the Tao te Ching, says “Your own positive future begins in this moment.   All you have is right now.  Every goal is possible from here.”   And in that “right now” we are none of us alone – we’ve all been invited, we’re all waiting for an invitation, we’re all able to host…  looking forward to the journey 🙂

Thank you Aaron. I always appreciate your honesty in moving forward towards positive, meaningful, fulfilling relationships. And learning from each other. And the ideas from the ‘great thinkers’ that you engage, and all the others from whom you glean ideas, thoughts and wisdom…and then your ideas, and sharing all that with us. Looking forward to more challenges and conversations in 2013!
