Community Mapping Project: June 19th in Victoria!

May 29, 2013

bcideas_badge_winnerWe’re excited about being hosted by the Self Advocates for a Brighter Future in Victoria for a community mapping session on June 19th, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church on Cedar Hill Road.  You can connect with them on Facebook for more information and they’re sending out registration materials as of last week.

They are hosting a two day conference – the first day (June 18th) has lots of interesting things going on and I’m looking forward to doing the graphic facilitation.   June 19th we’ll be joined by self advocate co-facilitator David Carter who will work with Shelley Nessman to engage people in a discussion about where they feel welcome, where they make a contribution and where they would be missed.   That afternoon community leaders and friends – last time in Vernon we had mayors, council persons, housing and education leaders, parents, siblings and others – will come in for a small reception from 4 – 5 p.m. and self advocates who worked through the day on the mapping will lead them through the content that we’ve explored.

Screen Shot 2013-05-29 at 9.45.46 AMThe SABF group is one of our favourite groups to work with – we learn so much whenever we spend time with them and they are lots of fun.  This community mapping session builds on the last one in a couple of ways.  We’ll be doing more with asking people to draw and collaging their work into the big maps, and we’ve got hold of piles of hands to explore an idea that our friend Linda Perry talked about: “how do we touch each other’s lives?”

Our Community Mapping Project is funded by a B.C. Ideas award in the area of Community Inclusion which will allow us to visit three cities.  We’ve been to Vernon already and will be in Vancouver, possibly in the autumn (we are looking for a community partner!).   Other cities have asked us to come and if you’d like to talk more about that, please feel free to contact me aaron@spectrumsociety.org
