welcome to the March 101 Friends e-newsletter employment issue

January 28, 2014

We’ve been grateful to be part of so many employment related conversations with so many colleagues.  AccessToEmploymentDetail

People have been talking about supported employment for years, but during the recent provincial employment appreciative inquiry process, which culminated in the Community Action Employment Plan we realized, among other things, that what self advocates and the families of folks with disabilities really wanted was work.

Work is the way many of us contribute, find others who share our interests, find a group to belong to, and also how we earn money for the things we want.

Spectrum has had a certain take on employment for some years, but recently realized that it was time to rethink what we’d been doing for a number of reasons.  While our stats were good, they weren’t good enough.   We still have people who identified long ago that they wanted to work, and they were not yet working.

And we felt that some of the other things we’ve been learning about contribution, invitation, networks and belonging could usefully be leveraged to help people get jobs.   To this end we have taken some gaming money and started an employment project – the first phase of this is to find out more clearly what we are already doing, and what we are doing well, and what we would like to do and make some plans.   Our experience at our recent community based strategic planning day (about 85 participants from all over came together to help us think through our next directions and some strategies) reinforced this.   People had a whole column (literally) of ideas about working!

Thanks to Amanda and Jenny for sharing their stories this month – Dayna is meeting with many more people and we’ll be sharing more!

We’re excited about our future!  Stay tuned!
