the Failure Wake #failurewake #sigeneration #radius_sfu

May 26, 2014

Liz Etmanski and I had a great time listening to stories of brave attempts at the Failure Wake that kicked off the Vancouver Social Innovation Generation week of events focused on social enterprise.   We’ve been hankering to draw together using our IPads so seized the opportunity but for the rest of the week we’re working on big sheets of paper mostly, with markers: “drawing BIG dreams” as Liz says.  Here’s our evening:

“Brieanna Ingram sees the potential in children with ADHD. She believes they are independent, critical thinkers who struggle with the constraints of the educational system. She started ADHD Services, a tutoring company to serve the community with her knowledge. Her curricula methods yielded impressive results and she quickly attracted new clients for her specialized ADHD tutoring business.” Great story (sorry I misheard your name!)

We were both really moved by “Preet Marwaha started OrganicLives as a means to facilitate change—his own and the society’s. Preet’s personal story led him to build a visionary health food company. The company grew quickly from a simple buying club to a restaurant and retail outlet. Preet will share his story and the lessons learned from the process of closing the business.”

Liz liked “Michael Tippett, an entrepreneur, journalist, and Director of New Products at Hootsuite, and his team started Ayoudo in 2011. Designed to stimulate the local economy as a type of next generation classified ad platform, Ayoudo would use social networks to power a local marketplace for goods and services.”

Such a great story! “Donalda Weaver started East of Main Café with her sister as a Social Enterprise to support Project Limelight Society, a free performing arts program for youth living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. East of Main was able to provide a home and hundreds of healthy meals for Project Limelight Society, which is now entering its fourth successful season.”

Excellent (and hilarious) MC!

People are networking as we wait for the wake to begin…

Liz and I go for coffee by the bay – ready to get to work!
